The Red Chair

What’s the deal with all these “National” food days and months?
Real “National” holidays just can’t get no respect these days…
O.k. Sorry for the Rodney Dangerfield lede, but it seems to be getting kinda ridiculous out there.
Example: Today, July 19th is National Ice Cream Day. Cool.
Tomorrow, July 20th is National Lollipop Day, National Ice Cream Soda Day and National Fortune Cookie Day.
Yeah, all on the same day.
Ridiculous.
In fact, a less-than-scientific counting of “National Food Holidays” by this intrepid writer (searching holiday databases and calling in some favors at LexisNexis) found there are 438 National Food Holidays in America.
Yeah, more food holidays than there are days. Again, ridiculous.
We love good food. We love any reason to celebrate good food. But, National Crab Stuffed Flounder Day, National Chip and Dip Day and for the love of god, National Vinegar Day just don’t MAKE SENSE.
How many people celebrate National Vinegar Day? And HOW do you celebrate such a holiday? We’re guessing it’s NOT by consuming vast amounts of vinegar. Health reasons, toxicity and all. Strange.
In fact, we’d like to nominate a new national food holiday: National Craft Cocktail Day. You know, so we can drink off the tension headache induced by all this holiday ridiculousness.
