It’s National Donut Day today. Wow. Another “national” food day.
Maybe this is why Twincy loves America. So many days to celebrate so many great foods. And trust us when we say we LOVE donuts.
One of our faves in the donut world comes from the ladies pictured above. Carrie Summer and Lisa Carlson have created a movement with their famed Chef Shack. Serving locally sourced street food with style and pizazz, the Chef Shack ladies are redefining street food in the Twin Cities. For Twincy, though, nothing tops their Indian-spiced mini donuts. Sweet, crispy and…delicious, to say the least, the Chef Shack’s donuts are maybe the single best thing about the Farmer’s Markets they sling their food at.
So, in honor of National Donut Day, Twincy decided to ask our gal pals from the Chef Shack a few donut-related questions. Because, on a day like today, why not go straight to the source?
Twincy: What makes a donut good? Why can I never eat just one?
Chef Shack: Perfect conditions for frying: example - air temp between 50-90F. Oil temp at 375F. They’re addicting! Hardly anyone can eat just one.
You guys put a twist on the traditional donut. Why change the recipe? Indian spices??
We use a standard cake donut formula, we really didn’t change the recipe. We just add an ever-changing assortment of spices to the dough and toss them in fresh spices too! We love all the spices from India, you can find them throughout our cooking.
People sure love you guys, and you’ve been at the forefront of the streetfood movement in Minneapolis. What makes streetfood so important?
Streetfood is a reflection of the community in any region of the world. It adds a positive vibe to any street and gives the small business owner a chance to do their own thing, without a lot of overhead.
If you could eat a donut from anywhere in the world, where would it be from?
Maybe Belgium or somewhere in Europe, because I haven’t been…
Create your ideal meal. What would it include?
Ideal meal: farm to table, like roast chicken and fresh greens, baked bread and a cobbler…(at this point the Twincy offices are drooling…)
Last question. Is it donut or doughnut…?
We say Donut!!!!
You can meet Carrie and Lisa and the rest of their Chef Shack crew at the Mill City Farmer’s Market on Saturdays, and the Kingfield Market on Sundays. Plus, they tend to show up all over town in their Chef Shacks…so stay tuned, this is food you don’t want to miss!
